What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercise devised by the visionary Joseph Pilates. Using his knowledge of exercise, including yoga, martial arts, gymnastics, dance and weight-training, he selected the most effective aspects from each and developed a system which gave the perfect balance of strength and flexibility.

Since Joseph Pilate’s death in the 1960’s, his ‘method’ of teaching has spread world-wide. Today there are many different ‘schools’ of Pilates – some adhering to his original work, others allowing his methods to evolve.

Body Control Pilates, as practised at The Pilates Studio Yarm, has been adapted from the ‘classical’ exercises developed by Joseph Pilates, incorporating the latest sports and medical research. The exercises are safe and effective for the average person and the average body.
